I know it sounds super gross- but I don’t wash my hair all that often. It is something I kind of love at this stage of life. When I was pregnant with Vivi, my skin was just overall more dry so it was easy to train my hair to go longer which put me washing about every 2 weeks. Now with crazy hormones and night sweats I usually wash around every 7 days.
To “train” your hair or help it go longer between washes, you have to start out just adding an extra day between washes. You can use dry shampoo, a cute ponytail, a messy bun- whatever you have to do to make it go just a little more time. You just continue to gradually add in an extra day between washes until you get to where you want to be. For me, 10 days is pretty good and usually when I am ok with washing it because by then, I have used dry shampoo usually twice and its time for a really good scrub.
When I do wash my hair, I don’t use heat to blow dry it. I normally choose a day that I can wash it mid-afternoon and let it air dry. I also don’t use conditioner unless its a light spray on one after my shower. I love my kid’s Honest Co. one. I brush it really well before my shower and then again after and it is fairly easy to brush through. Once it is dry- usually I do this the next day- I will straighten it and depending on if I am going anywhere that day (if that is a yes) I go ahead and use the straightening iron to curl it. This will last a few days for me without me having to do much to it.
Usually once or twice between wash days, I will use a dry shampoo that I mixed up (for some reason the smell of most store bought bothers me). My recipe is one I got from the Young Living blog. I will put it at the bottom of this post! I mix it up and store it in a small jar I got from the Target dollar section, but any container should work. I use a large powder brush to apply the dry shampoo all over and then just use my finger tips to massage it in really well. You can also use an empty shaker container like one that baby powder comes in. I also use a drop of their Mirah hair oil on the very ends before I use heat- like the tiniest drop to just help protect my hair.
When I get to the last few days before I wash my hair, I will wear a ponytail or a messy bun- just whatever I can come up with to wait out my days! The last thing I want to do is backtrack and have to wash more all over again. Honestly I don’t love the whole hair routine of wash, dry, style, repeat, and I just don’t have the same free time that I did in the past and who wants to spend hours every few days doing hair anyway? Hope this helps! Let me know in the comments how it works for you.
