In honor of National Read-A-Book Day, I thought it would be fun to share some of our favorite books to read around our home! I went through and chose some based on the kids’ ages and what they are enjoying right now. Some of our books have been well loved and read to all four of my babies at one time or another so they are very near and dear to my heart, while some are newer to our collection but we have read them over and over numerous times as well!
Vivi’s Favorites:
We love love love Guess How Much I Love You and have it in a board book as well. It’s such a sweet story and one that we have read to each child. Anything by Sandra Boynton is a huge hit! Her books all have the cutest and catchiest tunes throughout them. I find myself singing them for days haha. Goodnight Moon is such a classic and one that my kids have all loved. On the Night You Were Born is a favorite as well. I love the illustrations and how it portrays to kids that there is only ONE of them in all the world.
Hayes’ Picks:
All of Eric Carle’s books are well-illustrated and so colorful! We have The Hungry Caterpillar too and love it as well. Brown Bear is really good for teaching kids their colors because it is repetitive in how it talks about the colors for each animal in the book. Time for a Hug is one of my FAVORITE BOOKS EVER!! This one has been well-loved, but that makes it even more special. Hayes is obsessed with all things truck related so he is loving My Big Truck Book so much. Little Blue Truck is one that my kids can quote word for word! Such a cute book!
Charlie’s Picks:
Obviously he loves any book with his name in it, but Charlie Goes to School is a fun book about a homeschool family from the dog’s perspective. The Gruffalo is another favorite. I can remember Charlie taking it for show and tell a few times! Blueberries for Sal is a classic that we have enjoyed. I initially bought it to go along with one of our first homeschool studies that we did on B and blueberries, but it has become a go-to around here for story time.
Olivia’s Picks:
A Child’s Garden of Verses is a book of children’s poems that we read on a regular basis and used last school year for the kids to memorize poems from. The Mitten is such a good story, and the kids love the pictures. It has that classic feel and look which I love. The Invisible String is a book that tugs on my heart so much. It tells the message that kids are never alone, which is something all kids can battle from time to time.
My Picks:
Here are some that I tend to choose when I get to choose our book! The Good Egg is such a fun story about an egg that tries to be too good and perfect and sees that it is just too much. We Are the Gardeners is one of my most favorite books that we have. I love how it shows their family doing hard work TOGETHER and persevering through the process of learning how to be gardeners. I secretly want to think we can be “the gardeners” too- still up for debate because my green thumb isn’t so green. Under the Sun and Over the Moon is a nice book with beautiful colors that helps with counting in a fun story.
Family Read-Alouds:
We like to read as a family so when we started chapter books together, I wasn’t sure how the kids would respond since the pictures are much fewer and some aren’t even in color. I was so shocked- they have loved all of the ones we have read so far with Charlotte’s Web and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe being the favorites so far. We are currently in the middle of The Trumpet of the Swan and will finish it soon and go on to possibly The Secret Garden. We are still deciding =)
I would love to hear what books your family enjoys so that we can add some new ones to our bookshelves! Leave me some suggestions in the comments please!
